While working in radio Mike began his next career in art doing caricatures at county fairs and farmer's markets. Actually, any venue where he could set up his easel with no one in authority noticing, with any concern, he'd do so. "I remember around the time of the birth of my first daughter (who recently graduated with honors from the art school of Alfred University) I used to set up my easel, chairs, umbrellas and signs at a local lakeside business during the summer months. There along Seneca lake, storms would come along without warning causing me to realize I needed something in which to take shelter quickly. The original plan was to create a specially designed push-cart that would also double as my easel. My chairs would hang underneath, my signs slide into a thin shelf (also underneath) and my umbrellas would simply fold down. I'd push the whole thing quickly into a panel van and wait out the storm. The cart was designed and made but the hitch in my plan came when I found an old school bus at a price I couldn't pass up. Only $200! I basically spent the rest of that summer (or many weeks at least) figuring out how to finagle a very large push cart into the backdoor of a bus which was, at least, four feet off the ground! I was so excited about the prospect of owning and driving to my drawing destinations in an old bus that my original idea vanished. So much for taking cover quickly in the event of a storm! Not my crowning moment in the category of great ideas. On the upside, however that bus did help greatly as a moving van for us when we transitioned from the trailer park, where we once lived, to our home on the hill in Caton, NY."
